Most of my life I have had problems with constipation, bloating and gas.

I have tried a high-fiber diet includinglarge amounts of oatmeal, apples, vegetables, tons of water, etc but nothing seemed to work.

I have had great results, however,  from a company called diverticulitisinfo.com. I ordered (one of ) their diverticulitus kits and faithfully follow the regimen daily.

It took about four days to start seeing results. It s hard to believe that for the  first time in years my digestion and elimination have returned to normal.

I feel so much better!

"Irritable Bowel" refers to a disturbance in the regulation of bowel function that results in unusual sensitivity and muscle activity. "Syndrome" refers to a number of symptoms and not one symptom exclusively.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is also known as Functional Bowel Syndrome (FBS), Functional Bowel Disease (FBD) or spastic colon, spastic or mucous colitis and colitis. There are a number of studies done over the last 10-15 years that show the rate of people suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome in North America to be between 10-20%. Women are being affected at the rate of two to three times more often than men. However, it is not limited to adults. A study of 507 middle school and high school students by Hyams et al. indicated that 6-14% of the adolescent population complained of symptoms consistent with IBS. In the study, anxiety and depression scores were significantly higher for students with IBS-type symptoms compared with those without symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the number one reason people seek out the care of gastroenterologists in the western world. This intestinal disorder is associated with a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Though IBS affects millions of people, the exact cause is not known and medicine has no exact cure. Over 2 million prescriptions per year are written for the symptoms of IBS.

Irritable bowel syndrome IBS is also known as: colitis, mucous colitis spastic bowel, spastic colon, spastic colitis as well as functional bowel disease. But none of these names truly describe the condition. Research has found that even though the quality of life may be drastically compromised for those who suffer IBS, it is still seriously under diagnosed. Many try to deal with the condition on their own due to embarrassment and or fear until the symptoms become unbearable or the fear extreme. Studies have shown that the cost can be very high in treating IBS and that even though the drugs used for IBS are expensive most of them have not been shown to not be any more effective than placebos. Some of the drugs also come with costly side effects such as when the new and exciting drug for IBS was introduced called Lotronex. Just 10 months after hundreds of thousands of IBS sufferers began taking the drug; it was pulled off pharmacy shelves after several people died and many more suffered serious side effects associated with its use. Still others have learned later that they had undergone unnecessary surgery.

What are the Tests and Diagnosis for Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS is called a functional disorder because it is an abnormality in how a portion of the body works that is the problem and the cause (or causes) of that disorder are difficult to identify. It is not a disease, but a group of symptoms. There is no test that can be done to make a positive diagnosis. It may cause severe discomfort, but does not lead to colon cancer or any other disease.
Most Health Care Practitioners will still run a stool sample as well as, blood tests, and x rays to rule out other disorders of the Bowel. Usually your doctor will perform a sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy, which allows them to look inside the colon. Though this will not diagnose IBS it will rule out other Bowel problems like Crohn s Disease, Colitis and Cancer. The diagnoses will be made after those tests and from the totality of your symptoms.

Usually, through regular methods, a functional disorder cannot be diagnosed. The reason behind this is that it is not an infection or inflammation. And it is not a structural abnormality either. Because of that, commonly used testing methods such as x-rays or blood tests cannot detect it.

What are the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

- abdominal pain

- abdominal discomfort

-
pain that is alleviated by a bowel movement

- changing bowel frequency

- change in appearance of your stools

- constipation and/or diarrhea (may alternate)

- diarrhea

- constipation

- mucous in the stools

- urge to have a BM again after just going

- uncontrollable urge to have a bowel movement

- gas and/or bloating

Because of overlapping symptoms
IBS is often mistaken for Colitis. The pain is usually a crampy feeling in the lower abdomen. It may come and go. Relief may come after a bowel movement. Generally the pain is worse 1 to 2 hours after a meal. Stress can make the symptoms worse, but does not cause the symptoms. Some with IBS may also experience headaches and nausousness. Weight loss may occur if one eats less to avoid pain.
